Types of Security Systems
There are two main types of security systems: monitored and unmonitored systems. A system that has monitoring services is hooked up to a monitoring center through your phone line. The monitoring center watches your system for alarms to go off around the clock. So you are covered from fire, break-ins, and other emergencies 24/7 and the proper authorities will be dispatched to your home in case of an emergency. Most systems are equipped with door and window sensors, motion detectors, and yard and window signs. Alarms are designed to go off when someone enters without permission, and notify the monitoring center of any break-ins.
Unmonitored systems have a disadvantage to monitored systems. They usually involved flashing lights and loud alarms to let intruders know that they have been detected. But an unmonitored security system relies on other neighbors and people passing by to notice something is wrong and contact authorities. The main advantage to a non-monitored system is that most burglars will run as soon as an alarm or strobe light goes off because they don't want to be noticed, so it is likely to scare off a burglar. But a monitored system takes care of sending the authorities, so you have the peace of mind knowing that you are protected when you are not at home.
Cost of Home Security
When you purchase a system that includes monitoring services, most of the time home security companies give you large discounts on installation and free or discounted equipment. If you purchase the equipment yourself for a non-monitored system you may pay quite a bit up front. Wireless systems have become extremely popular with Iowa homeowners recently, and are typically less expensive to install. They are also more convenient because there are no wires or holes that need to be drilled in your walls to install the equipment.
What Plan do you have for Your Home?
No matter what kind of system you choose for your home, make sure you have a plan for home security to protect your belongings and home. A good plan for security should involve securing any doors and windows that are easy to get in from the ground level and should also have motion detector or security cameras. Make sure you have good door and window locks and that you don't leave your home with them unlocked. Get in the habit of securing your home when you leave and asking someone to watch your house when you are going to be gone for an extended period of time.
